MY HAIR GREW BACK AFTER LASER

Your hair grew back after laser. Before you give up, read this.

You did three sessions. It was working. You could actually see it. Then somewhere around session four, you got out of the shower, looked down, and it was all there again.

So now you're sitting there wondering if you've just thrown a few hundred dollars at nothing. You haven't. And the fact that nobody explained this to you before you started is the actual problem here, not your skin.

Let's fix that.

The short answer

What came back is not the hair that left. It's a different batch, and it showed up on schedule. This is the single most normal thing that happens in a course of laser, and it's the exact week most people quit.

Here's why it happens.

Your hair doesn't all grow at once

This is the bit nobody tells you, and everything else makes sense once you know it. Every hair on your body is on its own timer. At any given moment, some of your hair is actively growing, some is transitioning, and some is just sitting there resting, doing nothing. Only about a quarter of it is actively growing at any one time. The exact number shifts depending on the body part.

That matters, because laser and IPL can only treat hair that's actively growing. An actively growing hair is anchored into the follicle and packed with pigment. That pigment is what the light grabs onto. The light becomes heat, the heat travels down and disables the follicle, and that hair is done. A resting hair has barely any pigment and isn't properly connected to anything. The light has nothing to hold onto. That hair is effectively invisible to the machine.

So no matter how good your clinic is, no matter how good the machine is, one session can only ever treat the quarter of your hair that happened to be awake that day.

That's not a limitation of the technology. That's just how hair works.

So what actually happened at session four

Sessions one to three. You cleared the hair that was awake. Because that batch included a lot of your thickest, darkest, most obvious hair, the difference was dramatic. This is the honeymoon. It feels incredible.

Sessions four to five. The hair that was fast asleep during those first few appointments starts waking up. Not one at a time. In a wave.

And that wave arrives all at once, which is why it looks like the whole lot came back overnight. It didn't come back. It was never treated, because it wasn't there to treat.

This is the point of the rest of your course. Sessions five, six, seven and eight exist specifically to catch those hairs. If you stop at four, you've paid to clear one batch and then walked away right before the machine got a look at the rest.

Don't ask "is there hair." Ask these three things

This is the part that'll actually settle your head, because "is there hair" is a terrible question. There's always going to be hair until you're finished. Stand in decent light and look properly.

Is it finer? Compare it to what you were shaving a year ago. Laser and IPL don't just remove hair, they weaken what regrows. Thick dark hair coming back as thin wispy hair is progress, even though it's still hair.

Is it patchier? Look for gaps. Bare patches where there used to be full coverage mean those follicles are done. That's a win you can see, and it's the clearest one.

Is it slower? How long has it been since you last shaved? If you used to shave every second day and you're now getting four or five days, that follicle is struggling. Which is exactly what you want.

If the answer to those is yes, yes and yes, it's working. You're just looking at the wrong scoreboard.

When it genuinely isn't working

Now the honest bit, because we'd rather tell you than take your money. Sometimes it really isn't working, and there are reasons for that.

Your hair is too fair, red or grey. The light needs pigment to grab onto. Very blonde, red, white or grey hair has almost none. No target, no result. Anyone who books you in for a full course on white hair and promises you the world is not being straight with you.

Your settings never went up. This is the big one and it's the one nobody talks about. Your skin builds tolerance. If your settings sit on the same comfortable number for two years, you'll keep feeling like it's nearly working and it never quite will. Settings should be reviewed and climbed every single visit.

Your sessions were too far apart. Every appointment you push back by six weeks, another wave of hair completes a full cycle untreated. Consistency beats intensity every time with this.

Something hormonal is going on. PCOS, thyroid conditions and some medications will keep pushing new hair through no matter how good your treatment is. Laser can still help enormously, but you may need ongoing maintenance rather than a fixed course, and it's worth a chat with your GP so you're treating the cause as well as the hair.

The wrong light for your skin. Different skin tones and hair types need different wavelengths and different settings. One machine on one setting does not suit everybody.

What we do about it

We run both laser and IPL at Bella Medi, so we're not stuck making one machine fit every person who walks in.

We check your settings and climb them every visit. That's not us being gung-ho, it's us paying attention.

Most of our clients are done in 6 to 10 sessions, roughly every 4 to 8 weeks. After that, most come back for a top up one to three times a year.

And if your hair is never going to respond, we will tell you at your consultation. Before you've spent anything.

That's not a sales pitch. It's just how we'd want to be treated.

If you started somewhere else. You don't have to start over.

Bring us whatever you know. Which machine, roughly what settings, how many sessions, how long between them. Even a rough idea helps.

We'll have a proper look at where your hair is actually up to and pick up from there.

No judgement, no lecture about what you should have done. Plenty of women land in our chair halfway through a course that stalled, and it's usually a far easier fix than they're expecting.

Book a consultation and we'll tell you honestly where you're at.

Or give us a ring on (02) 6372 2682. We're at 5/160 Church St, Mudgee.
